A Holiday Roundup of ‘Comfort Movies’

It has just occurred to me that we are more than halfway through December, but I’ve not done a holiday movie review or other kind of post.

What I thought I would do instead is a round of roundups—in this case, rather than focus on a holiday theme, I searched for what I would call “comfort movies”. The kind of movie that provides escape from one’s daily travails in a manner so delightful, engaging, or uplifting, that you want to experience it again and again.

Here’s what I came up with in a quick online search:

The Most Comforting Movies Ever Made.

20 Comfort Movies To Warm Your Tired Heart.

Top 10 Comfort Movies.

And, as if that weren’t enough, here’s 63 movies that will always, always comfort you.

Out of all the movies on these lists, which ones would I pick?

Here’s a short list in no particular order:

The Princess Bride

Galaxy Quest

Little Miss Sunshine

Clerks (I know, I know … the list says Clerks 2, but I’m picking Clerks. So there!)

Desk Set

Duck Soup

Office Space

The Magnificent Seven

And let’s give an honorable mention to these:

The Apartment

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Hannah and Her Sisters

L.A. Confidential

The Thin Man

PS: Other than the ones I’ve posted for the holidays before, I’d include Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, The Cheap Detective, A Night at the Opera, Pulp Fiction, and The Big Lebowski! 🙂 And that’s just to start!

Yep. It is. 🙂

What movies do you take comfort in? Let me know in the comments! 🙂

Great list, Debbi. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

From your list it’s The Princess Bride and Charade. A few of mine are Only You(1994), White Christmas, The Blues Brothers, Singin’ In The Rain.

Thanks, Maddy! Those are great additions. The only one I haven’t seen is Only You, but the rest I could totally watch over and over. And over. 🙂

      And happy holidays to you!

  2. Fabulous list! I realized, while reading, I have never seen the film “Clerks”. If it’s made your list, I know I’ll enjoy it.

Hope you had the Happiest of Holidays Debbi!!! Very nice list, though I’m not sure myself if L.A. Confidential is a feel good movie. I’ve actually seen most of these with the exception of Desk Set, Clerks, and Little Miss Sunshine (another one I have doubts about being feel good), nice varied selection.

Cool! I’m gad you liked the list. For some odd reason, L.A. Confidential is a feel-good movie for me. But then I write crime fiction, so … 🙂
