I recently uploaded my first video essay to Youtube, discussing the themes of class and conflict within Luis Buñuel’s ‘The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie’. After being introduced to the format of a video essay through Sam Davies’ channel, I decided I wanted to give it a go. Being an ex-sociology student, I couldn’t think of a better topic to discuss than class, and I found all the answers I needed in the films of one of my favourite directors – Luis Buñuel.

Compiling a video essay takes passion, and time – two things I currently have in droves due to being stuck the house 24/7 at the moment. Having never been a technologically minded individual, I was worried I would fall at the first hurdle when compiling this essay.     Discrete Charm was the first Bunuel film I saw in its entirety when I was first getting into Foreign language cinema. Bizarre fantastical satire at its best. It’s always a toss-up between Bunuel and Pasolini as to who screws with our conceptions the best.
